This famous tomb sits just a few hundred feet down the road from the entrance to Mycenae. One of many tholos or "beehive" tombs in the area, it dates from around 1250 BC. It's a marvel of engineering and design. Although no one knows who was buried here, Schliemann decided that it must have been the tomb of Atreus himself, simply because it is so huge. In reality, it could have been the tomb of Atreus, or Agamemnon, or someone else entirely. The design of these "beehive" tombs is really remarkable: the inside of the hill is hollowed out and supported by an ingenious dome constructed of enormous blocks of stone. Some of the stones on the exterior weigh over 100 tons.
