Without any doubt the most impressive of all temples in Egypt. The four 21m-high seated figures of Ramses II that guard the temple facade are amongst the largest in Egypt and were built to warn the Nubians (tribes at/near Sudan) of Egypt's mighty power. To the north is temple of Nefertari, dedicated to Ramses II's loved wife.
In 1960s the international community united to save this wonderful temple from sinking into the rising water as a result of the construction of the new Aswan Dam. The temple and the hill were then sawn into 1,050 blocks and reassembled on the current site. Truely worth the effort!!
