Shrew Prints?

By far the most abundant prints I found were left by small mammals. They came in a wide variety of types from bounding prints with lines down the center left by a dragging tail to almost featureless troughs like this that terminate at holes. The animal that left this print ran above the snow for some distance and then plunged under the snow to tunnel under the surface for some distance before reemerging. These prints went on and on and on into the distance and were everywhere. This is where identification get tough. I think these troughs and their associated holes and tunnels are the work of shrews, but part of me thinks they could also be vole. I’ll need to do some study on this!

Hmmm, hard to say! I haven't seen shrews do exactly this, but it could be made by them. How wide was the trail, do you know? Typical width of the trail is about 3.2-4.1 cm. Mostly I see the tiny little shrew tracks, each print fairly distinctive. Nice shot anyway!

Neat study and observations Chris.

I think they are shrew tracks as well as my research indicates they "plow a furrow in soft snow, diving down ground-heat-releasing 'chimney' openings found around the sides of small trees". I saw a number of them today too, and a lot of other mammal tracks (but no mammals other than squirrels!). .
