Marken (old dutch village - near Amsterdam)

Marken is a little village near the city of Amsterdam. Originally it was an island but in these days it is connected by a road with mainland Holland. Marken consists of several small villages which together are called Marken. It's a place with mostly wooden houses. The visit was in winter which gave some spectacular icy views. Basically we walked around the island.

Thank you for sharing! My family and I visited Marken in 1958. I was 9yo, and remember the native girls who were about my age, and how unusual it was to see their blonde hair bangs sticking straight out. I also remember we smiled at each other, like children do when they see their own 'kind' . Very wonderful visit.

You've done a great job of capturing not just the feeling of extreme cold, but also the warmth of the colors that seem so bright and optimistic in the midst of winter's chill. Your ice pictures are particularly good-- I could look at them for hours! (Of course, I live in a place where freezing temperatures are pretty much unknown!) Very nice gallery Popko. Very beautiful place too. One day, I'll try to go there. But Amsterdam is a so large city that Merken must be at least at 50 Kms from the Dam :-)

I was there during my Army stint in Germany in 1956! Went to Amsterdam on leave and took tour around area. Remember the Zeider Zee and this village.

Very nice work! I went here in the Summer and it was so full of tourists it was hard to see the natural beauty of the place....you capure it very well! Cheers, Lisa
