Also known as Côte d'Azur (Azure Coast), this Mediterranean coastline on the southeast corner of France stretches from the sovereign state of Monaco to Saint-Tropez. This "playground of the rich" began as winter resort of the British upper class in the late 18th century. Writers and artists joined in early 20th century. After WW2, it became a popular tourist destination, with celebrities replacing aristocrats as conspicuous big spenders.
