Located in southwestern France, Carcassonne started as a Roman hilltop fortification that became a medieval fortress with double walls. In the 12th century, it was a refuge for the Cathar sect, until they were suppressed by the Catholic Church in 1209. In 1659, the border between France and Spain moved south. Carcassonne lost its significance as a frontier fortress.
