Consecrated on November 21, 1148, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta (Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) sits in the Piazza del Duomo and is considered a part of the Historic Centre of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church is famous for its fresco cycles, described by UNESCO as "works of outstanding beauty." To the left of the church stands the tower of the Palazzo Comunale, which translates to "city hall." This building has been the center of San Gimignano municipal government since the late 13th century.
