Ensley - 7-24-04 Female Western Sandpiper

There is a lot of variance in the length of Western Sandpiper bills. The females are larger and sport longer bills than males. In this photo you can see an extremely long bill on this molting female. Also note the long tarsus, Western Sandpipers are structurally different in many aspects from Semipalmated Sandpipers but bill structure and relative length of tarsus are usually quick indication to an ID in any plumage.
