Western Kingbird - 6-6-04 male

These birds have expanded into our area from their western haunts, mostly by leap frogging from power station to power station. They have a propensity for nesting among the net work of struts and trusses on the towers and switch gear and using the open grassy areas found around such installations. Even at a distance the Western's small head and different posture is a clue to look closer. I spotted this bird before I even got stopped as it perched on one of the distant over head lines.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Jeff - I really appreciate your posts on TN-Bird and pics on here. Thanks for the time and effort to keep the rest of us updated on the species you observe. I can hardly wait to bird in the Memphis area next spring at the state meeting. A whole different environment and ecosystem on that end of the state. You do a great job with these galleries. Kathy
