In this photo you can see the slight up turn to the bill. When I first found the bird it was way in the back of the pit, before it flew in closer I could not see the up turn and needless to say I was busy making sure a Black-tailed was not going to sneak through on me. The females are more finely and strongly barred than the male with a base color of gray-brown.
