The camera was fixed on a tripod with timer on to reduce any vibration.

Hi Mambo, I think it is not fair for me to make any comparison between S100FS and HS10 since I don't have S100FS. However, I can give you some general comments about these two cameras: (1) S100FS uses SuperCCD while HS10 uses BSI CMOS. If you get used to the Fuji colour, S100FS may suit you more. (2) The lens of S100FS is 33-396mm while HS10 is 24-720mm. HS offers you wider and at the same time zooms more and nearer to the subject. Which is better depends on your topic of photography. (3) S100FS does not have image stabilization while HS10 has. (4) HS10 has manual focus while S100FS does not. If you want to enjoy the manual focus process, HS10 may be your choice. (5) The nearest normal focus range of S100FS is 40cm while HS10 is 60cm. (6) The nearest macro focus range of S100FS is 2cm while HS10 is 1cm. (7) Max. shutter speed of HS10 is 30s while S100FS is only 8s. If you love taking night photos or light painting, HS10 may be better. (8) No hot shoe is provided in S100FS while HS10 has. If you want to have greater flexibility in external flash, HS10 is better. (9) LCD display of HS10 is larger (3" vs 2.7") (10) HS10 is heavier (666g vs 325g). If you want to have a lighter equipment, S100FS would be better.

Hi Shashank, Its focus ring lets you manually adjust the focus. When you switch on the MF button and turn the focus ring, the center part of the frame is enlarged for your better view. There is also an indicator showing whether your focus is correctly adjusted. However, I don't think it works well due to the lack of optical viewfinder. I prefer to use auto focus in all times for saving my time.

Hi Shashank, Absolutely not. Due to its small sensor size, HS10 cannot produce similar blurred background as DSLR with the same aperture. HS10 can only produce blurred background in macro / super macro mode with aperture wide open. You may refer to my P.25 and P.26 test pages for some samples.

Hi Janice, It is common to have pictures with un-saturated colours when you take photos for indoor / low light situation because of the poor light / colour quality of the scene. There are some ways for you to adjust your desirable colour in HS10: (1) adjust the "correct" white balance so as to prevent over-yellowish pictures; (2) adjust the "colour" setting; or (3) adjust the "tone" setting. For the comparison of different colour and tone settings, you can refer to my P.22 test page. What's more is to try to use the lowest ISO as possible to have the "correct" colour. The higher the ISO, the lower the saturation of the photo.

Hi Jacky, What I was trying to say is that when I shoot a picture, the colors of the pictures taken is not faithfully recorded. There is a color degradation. I notice this is mostly during indoors/low light shooting. I was using Automatic when taking these pictures. The colors of the pictures taken are less bright/vibrant than the original subjects. Is there anyway to adjust this? Thanks.

Hi Janice, It is very common to note that the colour in the display of HS10 varies slightly from that shown in your computer because the two devices do not share the same colour profile. Even you can set the colour profile of your computer with a colour management device (e.g., spyder), the colour of the monitor of your computer could hardly match that of HS10's display since you cannot use the colour management device to adjust the display of HS10. The difference would become greater if you see the picture from HS10 under bright sunlight. There is no solution to this. What I do is to adjust all colour-related settings in HS10 in the middle tone. For details, you can refer to my P.22 test page.

Because of the small sensor size, HS10 is not a camera being capable to produce a shallow DoF easily even it can zoom to 720mm. The only exception is when you focus the object at the min. focus distance of the lens (i.e., 2m) with a long distance from the background, but in this way, the angle of view is so narrow that you are unable to take a normal car shot. Therefore, the object itself must be small in size as well in order to be fitted inside the narrow angle of view and enjoy a shallow DoF. Hi Jacky, Thanks for your quick reply. I have another question to ask. I have tried shooting some photos and I noticed that when the camera focuses (auto or manual), the colours of the pictures in the display becomes less bright/vibrant than the original picture. How do I maintain the colours of the pictures when taking the pictures? Is there something wrong with my setup of the camera? Thanks.

Hi Jacky, Just bought HS10 two weeks ago, was thinking of doing snapshot on moving car with clear car shot and blured background, but seems to not work out. I have try f/5.6 wish a speed of 125 but somehow the background still clear, can you help me this? Thanks for your contributor for Fuji HS10 I feel satisfied buying this camera.

Therefore, the object itself must be small in size as well in order to be fitted inside the narrow angle of view and enjoy a shallow DoF. It is normal to have a clearer background than the foreground because it is a matter of fact which could only be explained by difficult optical equations of lens. Hi Jacky, I just bought my HS10 2 weeks back and am still trying to figure out how to use it. I am trying to take pictures with shallow depth of field with pictures in front clear and background blur but I can't seems to do it. Is there anyway of doing this in Automatic/automatic scene mode? I also tried in A and M mode with different aperture values but the picture is still the same; the front and back clear. Sometimes the background seems clearer than the foreground!! Pls advice. Thank you.

Hi, Justin, All these photos were taken at A mode, in which f/8 is the smallest setting that I can set. In M mode, f/11 can be used. I may later add some more shots using M mode in f/11 to test the DoF performance of HS10. Thanks for your idea.

Very comprehensive tests. I believe the HS10 stops down to f/11 according to its specs in the owners manual. Just wondering why you did not shoot f/11?
