Beyond Camera's Reach - HDR

These pictures has been produced from the several exposure bracketed shots and processed to be converted
to HDR (High Dynamic Range) images. Some of the images were taken handheld, some from tripod. The total dynamic
range of these pictures would never been achieved by single exposure shot taken by my camera.
There was a minimal postprocessing in Photoshop wich included mostly curves, NR and sharpenning.

Nice work!! I too have tried my hand at HDR, because in some cases you never know what or if you end up with! I love the way it makes things pop! I am finding myself spending the winter months going thru old RAW photos and trying this techique. Toronto never looked so good. B.

I have very mixed feelings about HDR, some of the pictures took with this technique give excellent and evocative results, other come out really too unnatural and remind me of Disneyland’s buildings. You are, in my opinion, a very good and interesting photographer, so I have perused also this gallery of yours in a totally unbiased way. I like a few of these pictures, but I find some others a little too “pushed”…anyway it’s an interesting experiment. Thank you for all the inspirational and thought provoking work. Marisa

The colours are quite amazing if not somewhat surreal but the overall effect of the gallery is outstanding. I have spent some time looking at the shots - they are just, again, amazing. And anyway - why not have a surreal finish to a selection of your photographs? Chris

Definitely unnatural photos. It's common knowledge that HDR software produces highly unnatural looking pictures. True no camera captures the scene exactly true to life....but these look like paintings. I have toyed with HDR software and found the results unpleasing as well. It's like Velvia on steroids.

Some of these pics are excellent, depicting what the scene really looked like to the human eye. The fall pictures however are over-saturated in red; I would have dialed it back a bit, which would still leave rich color but stopping short of day-glo. /zarabeth

Are you sure these scenes required HDR treatment? Even though processed as HDR, still many clipped highlights. Interesting and beautiful colors; quite artistic.

Love your compositions.....but I have to say that the colors are way over the top (and this is coming from somone who punches up their shots up a bit too).....and the HDR blends always have a very unnatural feel to them....probably due to microcontrast (or lack of therin) between the diffrent zones....the shots just look computer generated to me. For that reason, I stick with layer mask blends as I have more control over the subject at hand. I have to say though.....you have done a good job with the limited HDR tools we currently have. I suspect that in the future better tools will be created for us to use and I will eventually come into the fold as well as we grow past our HDR infancy. Roman

I like the intensity of colour, in your face, and handheld as well. Given the potential it would be interesting to see what you could achieve say, photographing a really bloody hunk of meat or pomegranate. Nice work, and if it does make some viewers physically sick then it has provoked a re-action, which is what defines art!

Mike. Thank you for your honest oppinion. I do appreciate critique and find it very usefull. Many people and you mentioned that colors are looking unnatural. I just want to ask one question. Unnatural compare to what? To those that reqular image is providing? Or unnatural to what do you see in nature? I did not see any image that quite accurate reproduced the real dynamic range and colors of the real scene. So in this sense they are unnatural as well. My HDR images providing actually much more closer to real live colors then any P&S or even dSLR cameras. You wonder if shuch colors do exist in nature, come to Canada during fall. You will see them on every corner. Michael.

I've seen some HDR images taken at night of buildings lit with various kinds of artificial light which have looked very good indeed. However for landscape work I find the 'flat' appearance combined with the un-natural colours really off-putting. In fact they make me feel quite ill just looking at them. Sorry! Mike

Superbly well done HDR gallery - it is all to easy to misuse this technique (I know from personal experience) - You have it nailed. As with all techniques, it is reliant on strong composition to start with and you have more than succeeded on this front. Andrew
