La Brocante

“Brocante” in French means “Flea market”,
so it’s obvious to everybody
what the subject of this gallery is by now.

Flea markets are places where some people go to buy,
at rather expensive price,
useless objects, which other people have been happy to get rid of…
The amusing side of this matter is that often,
the people who wanted to empty their closets and their attics
from a lot of old stuff,
are the same who come to Flea markets to buy
other equally useless old items,
which had belonged to others.
And the dealers, who put them on sale,
are the same people who had been paid to take away
all what encumbered, caves trunks and cupboards.
A surrealistic ballet of trades, which we might see as a social metaphor,
if we were in a sociological mood,
but we are not, are we?

So let’s simply consider Flea markets as a place to stroll quickly
looking more at the intriguing people we can meet there,
rather than looking for an impossible good bargain.

Sometimes it can even be pleasant…

A sober dress very suitable for winter...	There is competition among the street vendors of hot soup...	Hot soup and red wine to keep the vendors warm...	Roasted chestnuts anyone?
The old pirate who grilled sausages...	Soup & Pastries....	The shy lady who sold gingerbread houses...	Merry vendors in seasonal mood
The customer....	The blues of blue knickknacks...	Pseudo-Peruvian vendor of second-hand teddy-bears…	Once upon a time two soldiers....
Open air den...	And sometimes a good find....	Invitation...	Full comfort bench...
Slightly worn out open-air living room...	Crowd...	Flea market with a view	A broad choice of...useless nice little items!
Looking through	The scale	Searching....	Open air living room
What is he looking for?	The choice....	Every single item has a story to tell...	Flea market atmosphere....
Who owned all that stuff? Why did they sell all away? Who will buy that?	The lady in blue sells pottery....	Cats don't care for soup...	Passage to India...
Indonesian second hand dream	If you want to be successful in your flea market business….	A Flea Market dealer must not be necessarily also a good gardener...	The bottle of mineral water is not a second-hand one...
Outfit for Summer Valkyrie	Red is the colour	This flea market dealer must be a pirate...	Just a lace curtain...
A deserved break and a glass of wine...	Please, sit down...	Are you sure, darling, to know what is it for???	"I have done this job for nearly all my life, Madam..."

Surrealism has its origins in the flea market, where Andre Breton discovered that the seemingly random relationships of unrelated objects in the Paris flea market could trigger a mental process that leads to new ways of understanding and perception. Many flea markets reflect personalities and trends popular culture. One of my favorite subjects for a photo essay, and interesting to see how others see and interpret these places.
