King John's Castle

Ireland is famous for its castle and this Norman castle in the village of Carlingford dates back to 1200. It was commissioned by Hugh de Lacy and King John, brother of Richard the Lionheart, is believed to have stayed there for three days in 1210. It was added to in 13th, 15th and 16th centuries. It is currently in the ownership of the Office of Public Works and eventually it's planned that restoration works will be carried out to make it safe to open to the public.

I do hope they make it safe so you can go and visit the castle. What a life!!! I don't think castle-living would have been very comfortable or warm...

Good capture of this interesting ruin.
They must have been such cold and draughty places to live in.

It is a testimony to its original construction that it is still standing. Beautiful old castle and photo. I wonder what it will look like restored.

What a majestic spot. I know it was intended to be imposing to the subjects and it definitely reflects that in its siting.

Great capture of this wonderful ruined castle! :)
So far I do not recognize anything that you've posted from my visit to Dundalk in 1985! Either my brain is a sieve or I never saw these sites!
