Tools

These old tools belonged to my grandfather and my father and are now sometimes used by my husband.
My maternal grandfather was a carpenter and like many young Irish men of his generation he went to America in search of work. Unusually, he returned home from New York and, with the money he had earned there, set about extending the cottage he'd left into a two-storey farmhouse. I imagine that traces of his craftsmanship remain in the
staircase and other pieces of carpentry around the house.
My father was a builder and he too went overseas in search of work. His
time in south Wales left him with a love of classical music and opera. He too left his stamp on the house.

Thats a superb still life with great light, it could almost be portrait photography since it portrays the users of the tools so well. .....if that makes any sense

Wonderful to see these tools. I too have my Dad's Brace n Bit and a Stanley Plane, So I will cherish them some more as "power tools" have taken over.
globalgadabout11-Sep-2011 21:53
it's plane (sic) to see you have a rich family story to draw on..the old hand-crank drill
must be a treasured artifact as well, and the square definitely an older model yet potentialy useful once one adapts...doubtlessly both houses and furniture were fashioned with such simple yet effective tools long before Ikea simplified the steps to an easily digestible process...the traces of sawdust accentuate the labours carried out by these wonderful old tools...V

Ooh, brace'n'bit - not seen one of those for a while... but tut tut - you shouldn't keep the plane blade-down like that :o)
