Belt Tightening

It's all about belt tightening in Ireland these days. Whatever vague talk there was a few years ago about
spending our way out of the economy has been forgotten about. Cutbacks and increased taxes are
the order of the day, and when I get my pay cheque tomorrow, I'll discover just how much extra tax
I'm paying thanks to the Budget at the end of 2010. So it was probably just as well that I loosened
my purse strings and bought a few items, including this belt, in the sales today.
At long last, the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) has announced the date for the General Election:
March 11th. There is a feeling that people want real change this time round but, unless the
whole political system is changed to create a more caring society, where people not profit matter, I don't think they'll get it.
There might be new faces in power but there probably won't be any major differences in policy. I'll still have to pull my
belt a bit tighter.

Excellent shot and commentary! We are experiencing much the same here in the states. New Jersey, where I live, is one of the states that is in a terrible financial crisis. There has been a great bit of belt tightening here. It is most evident in the community mental health center where I work. The cuts have been very deep for us and our biggest worry is how we can continue helping the most disadvantaged and neediest with so few resources. ~V~

Nice shot Mairead. Maybe we should all take our belts to the politicians bottoms! V

A beautiful illustration of a sad state of affairs.

Nice piece of allegory, and nice macro-like details as well. I think that it's often the case that means and ends become confused in the corridors of power. The reason for having good economic numbers is to reflect an economy that supports the people in it. All too often though the fixation becomes getting the numbers (notably GDP growth), even though they may not truly reflect the conditions that people are living in.

Doing your part to help the economy by purchasing the belt :-) Nicely done.

The belt has been tightened so much, I can hardly breathe.
There should be a few gallows erected, that might wake them up.
Anyway my friend, this is a fine image.V.

You are not alone, there's a lot of belt tightening going on here too.
