We don't normally 'do' Valentine's Day in our house but thanks to a strategically placed display of
flowers in the supermarket, I was presented with a lovely bunch of flowers this year.
While there's nothing wrong with the idea of expressing appreciation for those we love,
Valentine's Day has been hijacked by the peddlers of all sorts of goods from flowers to wine,
from chocolates to jewellery. It also smacks of smugness which must make it somewhat sad
for those without anyone to celebrate it with.

Good narrative - and I agree...that's why I never buy cards :o)... sentiment divulged face-to-face is so much better...

Beautiful image Mairead! V

an elegant image...yes V Day has become yet another sales theme...anything to wring more money out of consumers..resisted it all myself, except the wine peddler..

Nice one :-)

What a romantic image with the music in the background. Whatever color the Danube is now, the music is still golden.
Yvonne15-Feb-2010 07:20
Oh lovely! I had a piano version of the "Blue Danube" as a youngster!

I celebrate my daughter's birthday and remember happier days ;) But you're right, Mairead. Some of our holidays have been so commercialized that it takes the romance away. A beautiful Valentine's Day tribute. A lovely rose! V~

A beautiful Valentine tribute, l love the idea of valentines, little secret letters from the heart. Too bad we don't have time these days to make them by hand. V

We celebrate my son's birthday & I refuse to fall into the commercial trap...
Stephanie14-Feb-2010 19:59
I agree with you where all holidays are concerned ~ Hallmark is making a killing today for sure!
BUT, I do like the idea of celebrating a day with one other person ~ so Valentine's day is a nice time for some togetherness. ❤
Your photo is so romantic and lovely!

Lovely picture nonetheless.
Colin Storey14-Feb-2010 19:30
Lovely image, and I agree, supermarkets do place flowers in full view and strategically to get people to buy them. Oups!! thats me.
Mary Terry14-Feb-2010 18:42
I agree...but I think it's the same with most holidays now. The emphasis is now placed on the material gifts instead of on the sentiment.
That is a beautiful image! V

I'm sorry for disappointing you, but the Danube is awfully grey now. But your image is vivid and beautiful.
pkocinski14-Feb-2010 18:22
I'm starting to feel that way about most holidays - too commercialized and they've lost their true meaning. Something "special" on any other day of the year means so much more than something "just because it's a holiday". Great image though :-)
Phillip Normanton14-Feb-2010 18:17
Ah, a very classical looking St. V shot nevertheless :o)
Kevin Chester14-Feb-2010 17:47
Whoops! Sorry, great Still life shot. At least you got a good pic out of the over priced roses ;-)
Kevin Chester14-Feb-2010 17:46
LOL Yes those supermarkets can read us men like a book.
Ursula Armstrong14-Feb-2010 17:43
you are so right! Especially what you said in your last sentence: It must be so hard for lonely people! On the other hand, it is nice to say people you like that you like them. So: I like you and I love your style and your pictures, Mairead. Uschi (V)

I couldn't have put it better myself! Yet another occasion that has been taken over by commercialism...(beautiful rose though!)
Pat Shawyer14-Feb-2010 16:25
Chris is of the same opinion as you, I am too really, but I would be disappointed not to get a card !
