Posting this a day late, for even though I had a day off yesterday, I didn't have much time for photography or pbase.
Had a much appreciated lie-in as my husband volunteered to take our son to school. Then we decided to go to Newry
and do some shopping - nothing exciting, mainly groceries.
The exodus of shoppers heading from the towns in the Republic of Ireland across the Border to Northern Ireland is showing no signs of abating as the Euro remains strong against Sterling. It was very busy in the supermarket that we went to and there was a mile long tailback into Newry as we returned home in the afternoon.
One of Newry's main shopping centre The Quays is located beside the old Drumalane Mill which has been refurbished as a retail/office complex. I was taking a couple of shots (having discovered that I'd only my macro lens on the cameras as I had grabbed it going out the door) when a security man approached me to say I shouldn't be taking photos without getting permission. He was satisfied when I said I was only taking them for a hobby and unfortunately I wasn't on a public road so I couldn't argue with him. But why are the management shopping centres so sensitive about people taking photographs? I can understand that they mightn't want people taking candidates of customers but in this case I was outside in the car park.

I was questioned by three security men at my health clinic who even made calls to see if I was really a patient. They threatened to take my camera away and when they approached as me I was getting shots of mating butterflies!!!! I hate to think that they had been following me for practice. The shots were all of the landscaping. I am still angry, but too apathetic to complain, not that it would accomplish anything. I do, after all, look quite dangerous :)

At least you came away with a great shot, Mairead. Silly rules... V~

Excellent !

Despite your difficulties with the security officer, you ended up with a terrific shot! The same insanity reigns here. Photography is not allowed on commercial property...unless it is done surreptitiously.

The irony is they state security reasons for not taking pictures. The thought of a Alqueda suspect using a whooping great SLR to do his survalance is simply rediculous. At least you got a worthy shot in the end.

It's a nice shot but your story is another good reason for me not to go into town ;-)

masterful framing of this memorable view...yes paranoia reigns these days....and offcial fussiness...with the winter olympics coming here in the new year we are due for a security-check nightmare of epic proportions with thousands of police and troops ready to pounce on unsuspecting locals and tourists...

Great image in spite of the security encounter you received. Here in the states, since 9/11, security is still ridiculous at some places for even simple things (like Pat's rubber rings for example). We seen to have lost a balance that may never return unfortunately.

I have been chased off from the shopping center and the mall. I had TWO security guards escort me from an outside shopping plaze where I was photographing the flowerpots on the street!! I was furious. But, it wasn't a public street so I didn't have a say-so. Yet, everyone takes photos with the cellphone camera! I agree with Neal, I keep a small point and shoot camera in my purse all the time. I can take photos without being noticed! This is a very nice scene you've posted. Well done.

A surreptitious little point-and-shoot has its advantages from time to time. You certainly did well under those conditions!

Outstanding capture! ~V

Excellent - love the wibbly backdrop! They say that the shops don't like losing control of their 'brand' by having it possibly misrepresented by rebels like us. That gives the security peeps an excuse to exercise their 'powers' but you seem to have found a reasonable one :o)

Mairead, a woman told me off for taking pictures of rubber rings last summer ! They were so colourful, as was her language ! Ridiculous. But I love this shot !
