Theatre in Ireland started to develop towards the end of the 19th century. In the 100+ years since then we have enjoyed a flourishing of the dramatic arts, and are proud of well-known dramatists stretching from Shaw,Wilde,Synge,O'Casey,Beckett,Macken,Friel,Murphy, and many others right up to the modern playwrights who succeed in keeping many many theatres open throughout Ireland. Very many international dramatists have their works staged here also. In addition, there is a very lively amateur drama movement that is very active during the winter and spring seasons.
