Nikon D200 with 105 VR Micro lens and SB 800 flash, usually with a 1.7x teleconverter (not shown here).
The TC helps keep the dust out of the camera during the daily switch to the telephoto lens.
Set on spot focus, continuous mode, usually at 1/250 s and between f 18 and f 25 and to fire only when a focus is detected.
Reflectors are moved about depending whether shooting from the side or above.
Baffle in front of flash prevents direct light on subject.
Moth is placed on thin Plexiglas or polycarbonate window material
that has been roughed up on both sides with 320 grit sandpaper to reduce shadows and reflections.
Usually neutral gray but sometimes colored paper is placed below the plastic substrate.
Also, this flash has a small white card and wide-angle diffuser that can be pulled out.
This has helped even out the lighting.
