Red-bellied Black Snake 2

We were walking the dog a kilometer or so from home today and ran into this one eating a frog. The dog almost stepped on it. I'm sure that if it hadn't had its mouth full it would have bitten poor old Lucy. It is a Red-bellied black snake about 1 meter long, a highly venomous snake from the east coast of Australia. According to the books it is 22% as venomous as the Indian Cobra which isn't too bad. (To put this in perspective Australia's most venomous snake, and the worlds most venomous terrestial snake known, is the Fierce snake or as it is also known the Inland taipan, and it is 50 (fifty) times as venomous as the Indian Cobra.) Sorry if you have read this before but its worth repeating. Ive got a closer shot and will put it up next.

I do not know what species of frog it is. Perhaps an Eastern Banjo frog??? If anyone knows could they let me know please.

Guest, I am sure that it is not a Cane Toad. I think an Eastern Banjo frog but cant be certain on that. It was in the middle of winter in the Blue Mountains near Sydney.

Thanks for the info, Lyle. I do know that Australia has more of the world's most poisonous snakes than anywhere else. At least up here you can easily tell that the bad ones have rattles (for the most part).

Well done, Lyle. You must have been thinking quickly to rescue Lucy and to get these shots as well.
