12th July 2004 - a modest celebration

Today we are celebrating. What’s in the glasses? Sparkling water. What’s for supper? Omelette! Why are we celebrating? The exchange of contracts on our little cottage in Cornwall – the one we’ve been holding our breath about since February when we saw it and fell in love with it with the snow on the ground! There is no going back now, at exchange of contracts the deal is done and, as of 9th August, the tiny miner’s cottage, perched high on Bodmin Moor will be ours.

For all these months we’ve patiently waited for our sellers to find a new home for themselves and to get their life sorted out so they could vacate our cottage. It’s now happened and we heard today that the legal work is done and the house will become ours in a flash.

It’s exciting and daunting all in one go. The house needs major refurbishment and won’t be suitable to live in for some time to come. The roof needs replacing, there is no kitchen, no heating and the wiring is positively dangerous. BUT, on the plus side, it has a slate floor that someone has thrown concrete over at some stage in the past (but is easily chipped off), it has a granite fireplace, exposed beam ceilings and two-foot thick walls. It has views to die for and a pub within a short walk, what more could we want? Neither of us are strangers to this type of refurbishment, David’s house in Ascot was a major project and all of the houses I’ve owned have been too. As long as we are careful we can make our dream come true. All we have to do now is to keep our nerve and get busy!

It’s only step one of our grand plan for relocation and it’s softly softly all the way – I’m no risk-taker and neither is DM so we’ll be taking it nice and slow and making sure we get it right. It is, though, the start of the realisation of a long-held dream….to have an address in Cornwall. To be close to the sea, close to Toby, close to nature and best of all, it’s ours. It’s ours together. We chose it together and we have done all this legal work to make it ours. It’s the first time we’ve done that as I already owned this house long before DM and I got together nearly four years ago now. We truly have a partnership now.

OK – I know, it’s a very modest dream to hold but nonetheless I can think of nothing to top it in my mind. I’ve never been one for flash cars or expensive holidays. I’ve never had (or even wanted) designer clothes or any of that stuff. All I’ve ever wanted is to have my ‘place in the sun’ – this is that place. My circle is rotating again and my dreams now seem easily within my grasp.

Congratulations to you both! I know that wonderful feeling, Cathi and I recently bought a piece of property in the mountains. It's not the beach (which I would prefer) but it's the next best thing!

So keep us up to date on what you do to the cottage, and post us some pics! It looks like a wonderful location, absolutely gorgeous...

Oh, Linda this deserves more than sparkling water!! So happy for the both of you, and I've decided that the Merlot in front of me is to be used to toast David and yourself on this milestone. So cheers to you both. You will have to keep a diary of the cottage's refurbishment - I can see you really getting stuck in to the project!
Every Happiness,
Ray
