** Warning** some of the images in this gallery are a bit gruesome and not for the faint hearted! **
Lion (Panthera leo) is one of four big cats in the genus Panthera and is the heaviest living cat after the tiger, with very large males weighing more than 250 Kg.
Wild lions now exist only in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India.
Until about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal other than humans.
They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia and in the Americas.
The 2008 photos are of a large pride of lions (about 20 individuals) seen near Nottens Bush Farm in Kruger in October.
The 2007 photos were taken at Inyati Game Lodge and the 2003 photos were taken in the Serengeti, Tanzania and Amboseli, Kenya.
Shown prominently in the 2007 photos are the Mapogo Males - a coalition of 5 males renowned for their violence towards other neighbouring lions.
