Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants whose insect trapping mechanism features a deep cavity filled with liquids which digest the insects. The sides of the pitcher are slippery and may be grooved so that the insects cannot climb out. Digestion is carried out by microbial action or by enzymes secreted by the plant itself. The North American genus Sarracenia are the so-called trumpet pitchers . This gallery features Southeastern US pitcher plants, several of which are endangered.
