After checking your pics more thoroughly, I think it's a Pennsylvania Leather-Wing, a bit dark because it got wet maybe? Your pictures are great!

Excellent website and beautiful photos! I caught a huge beetle that looks a lot like the Giant Root Borer, but it's a little bit lighter and has swept-back antennae (thinner and curved). It fell in my pool and I got it out. It's very slow and unafraid. I would be happy to send a photo. I was afraid it was an invasive species, but now I don't think so.

Hi, love your site....I found it trying to identify a large ....beetle?....nymph? in my garden. I'm in eastern canada in new brunswick and I've never seen the like of it. I'd like to send a photo if possible....however, it is huge, brown about 3 inches at least in length and about an inch across. It has no antenna and very "muscular" legs, heavy and might give a pinch. It's back is flatish as opposed to rounded like a ladybug type....it almost appears squashed (it's not) or tucked up wings. Anyway....I dont know what it is and I'm going to try and find out somehow. Love your bugs by the way. They really are lovely, I like bugs :) is there a way I can send a jpeg.

Thanks! With the help of your great page (and Google directing me here), I was able to prove to my daughter that the bugs we have been seeing are Stink Bugs and not Assassin beetles. The wet weather this year has brought them out in the area in record numbers.

i am unable to identify a grasshopper. its eyes look just like a praying mantis and are yellow-green. it has a long abdomen and very long legs. the top of its abdomen is creamy white, but the top of its head has two dark green stripes on each side. its antennae looks short and bumpy. please try to tell me what it is.

Very nice photos. Trying to identify a bug-- Looks like an ant but has leaf-footed bug -type beak, not pinscer mandibles. Red and black markings. Some sites seem to suggest an ant mimic (Miridae) but cant get good answer. MUST KNOW HABITS before poss. release back to the wild (backyard). Comments?

Thanks much - the photos are great! I am still unable to identify the black beetle which is approx. 1 inch long and 3/4 inch wide that showed up on my siding and sliding patio door screen around the beginning of Sept. They actually got into my house and I found around 10 hiding out in and around the valance I have at the top of my slat blinds....UGH I will not let the patio door/screen open again. Anyone have any idea what these buggers are?

Some of your grasshopper images are incorrect. The "lubber grasshopper" is a male brachypterous Melanoplus sp. male, not one of the lubbers. Most of your unidentified grasshoppers are nymphs, but you could get close on several. One unidentified grasshopper is a differential grasshopper adult, at least one is a red-legged grashopper. One is a decticine nymph, one of the long-horned grasshoppers. You have a couple of shots where the grasshopper is dead, victim of a fungal disease. The "two stripped grasshopper" isn't that species. The images are of an acridine grasshopper, the two stripped grasshopper is a melanopline. The 'tiger beetle', the large, dark, and with white spots on the tips of the elytra, is the carolina tiger beetle, Megacephala carolina. Good shots of these insects!

Lew I have just been enjoying your great pictures. I believe that the unknown beetle at the bottom of this page, next to the plant bug is the clay colored leaf beetle Anomoea laticlavia. Now you should check further as I am not an expert, but that is what I have identified it as on my site( it be frank I can not remember how I reached that ID but I think it was pretty sure).
