SHARP-BILLED GROUND FINCH (Geospiza nebulosa) 929

Galapagos Islands - Eduador

The most famous birds in the Galapagos - aside from boobies, for entirely different reasons - are the finches. There are 13 species of these small, usually plain birds, which are otherwise unremarkable except for their sigiificance in the development of evolutionary theory. As a result, they are known collectively as "Darwin's finches." It is thought by some ornithologists that the sharp-beaked finch may be the closest to the ancestral form of all Darwin's finches.
