Barred owl

Shaw Woods

We were walking along a trail at Shaw Woods when a barred owl started calling. As we scanned the trees for that one, a second one flew in and perched on a dead tree very, very close to us. We stopped and looked at each other, and I managed to get a bunch of photos while the owl moved closer and then started calling. After a few minutes we left, the owl was still there, probably making sure we didn't come back! They are a fairly common species in this area but it is always a treat and a thrill to see one.
