Elderberry borer (Desmocerus palliatus)

Gatineau

A very handsome, large beetle of about 26mm in length. According to Bug Guide they are uncommon. I know I've rarely seen them, and not for years. The larvae feed on the roots of the native wild growing black elderberry shrub. The adults, like many beetles, nectar on flowers. I saw three today and all were on elderberry shrubs.
