Potter wasp nest

Found this small clay nest made by a potter wasp, under a rock on today's walk. These amazing little nests are made by wasps in the Eumenes genus. Imagine, the wasps carry soil mouthful by mouthful and then mold and shape this sturdy little nest, lay their eggs, and then seal it up! This one is affixed to the underside of the rock.

This one has been opened, so either something got in and parasitized the larvae, or the adult wasps emerged.

Fascinating indeed; a potter might be pleased with this effort bar the hole.
