A short poem by Pai-ta-Shun, about whom I know nothing other than this poem. It seems infused with the melancholy that so many traditional Japanese and Chinese poems have, and also seems to fit the season of autumn.
The days and the months do not last long,
The springs and autumns follow one by one,
And when I watch the fall of the flowers,
And the leaves of the trees,
I know that even the loveliest person
Little by little must change.
