Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis)

This is the beautiful beetle responsible for the near total loss of mature ash trees in this area. First reported in the 1990's in the northeastern US, it spread to the Ottawa area about 5 or 6 years ago. This insect is in the Buprestidae family, the wood-boring beetles, also called jewel beetles because of their shiny colours.

Maybe the same beetle that is decimating ash trees in Europe.
What a shame such beauty causes so much damage.

So that's what they do when they eat. And I loved them when I was a kid. Little did I know.
