Woolly Alder sawfly larva (Eriocampa ovata)

These sawfly larvae are very common right now on speckled alder. Underneath that waxy white coating, they are a smooth green colour. The waxy coating seems to be the same sort of thing that woolly alder aphids use. Interesting that both of these species, one a bug, one a Hymenoptera, both use the waxy coating on their bodies.
