Willow weevil (Cryptorhynchus lapathi)

This medium size (about 7 mm) weevil was sitting on a leaf, looking at first like a bit of dried plant matter. When I got closer it immediately bent its legs, flopped onto its side, and played dead, as weevils so frequently do! I lifted it onto my hand whereupon it began moving around.

What an interesting insect - not the most beautiful but his mother sure loves him...

Cool diptych of the weevil. Interesting that it knows to play dead. V.
