Soldier beetle (Rhagonycha fulva)

It is easy to see what this soldier beetle has been up to! Nectaring on Milkweed. You can see the milkweed pollen pads on its feet... those orange things dangling off of them. This is how the milkweeds are pollinated. The sticky pads adhere to the feet of insects who land on the plant, and are transferred to the next milkweed it lands on. Unfortunately for some, their legs become stuck in the very tight florets of a milkweed flower (where the pollen pads are), and they cannot get free. Finding dead insects caught this way, on milkweed is not uncommon, nor is finding just one leg left when the poor thing pulled itself free.
