Pennsylvania leatherwing (Chauliognathus pensylvanicus)

This very common, even abundant, soldier beetle is shown here on Boneset. By August, these beetles are very noticeable, and will feed on many flowering plants, but seem to prefer goldenrods. According to Bug Guide, "The larvae feed on aphids, maggots, small caterpillars, and grasshopper eggs" which makes them an invaluable bio-control agent!
