Bald-faced hornet (<em>Dolichovespula maculata</em>)

Bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata)

Feeding on a rotting grape in my garden. These wasps are large (15mm+) and beautiful in their shiny black and white. These are the ones who make the large paper nests, often high up in trees, but not always. They will capture other insects to feed their young, but for themselves, they prefer nectar and rotting fruit!

Fabulous shot of this guy.
Haven't actually noticed any hornets recently but I am sure they are there.

To each his own or in Latin: non gustibus disputandum est ( there is no accounting for tastes).
So crisp, one can see the cilia on its body. V
