Bridge orb weaver (Larinioides sclopetarius), female

These guys are night hunters. They sit in their web as the night comes on and wait for insects to get entangled. This was at the Interpretive Centre of the Fletcher Wildlife Garden. There were about 7 spiders, all close together, but this was by far the biggest. As I watched, a small moth had the misfortune to fly into the web and she was on it in an instant. I took this shot about midnight. The next morning I went back and not a spider could be found! They were waiting for the nighttime.

Very interesting spider picture, Christine. It looks so pretty waiting for insects to come by. The picture looks very good, considering that you took it around midnight. Wasn't aware, that some spiders also hunt during nighttime only. As usual, I learned a lot through your comment, Christine. Excellent. V
