These tiger beetles were plentiful today in the Sandhills area of Constance Bay. The sandy trails adjacent to woods are perfect habitat for them. They are a variable species and I have seen them this dark purple, and also green, and even a bronzy colour. The pattern on the elytra also seems to vary a lot. The female of this pair has an ant in her mouth (with the ant's head nearby). The poor ant made the mistake of running up to them at which point the female grabbed it and had a meal, the male all the while trying desperately to hang on and do his duty!
