Purple loosestrife leaf beetle (Galerucella calmariensis)

taken at the Arboretum. This insect is one of the success stories of bio-control. Introduced about a decade ago to control the spread of purple loosestrife, it has managed to curb the spread in many areas and in some places people report seeing far less of the loosestrife than they used to. Loosestrife, which is a beautiful plant, will never be eradicated, but it can be controlled, thanks to these leaf beetles (Chrysomelid beetles).
