Then and Now

Education has changed...we were taught to spell and add up without a machine....and we could
count change backwards and most importantly remembered :)

A terrific thought provoking juxtaposition! V

Give me the old days! Books and paper and pens and pencils, chalkboards, and cursive writing.... V

So thought provoking, Laine.
One thing I found seriously worrying, when Kate started school in 1987, was the decision to end competition.
Life is a succession of competitions.

How things change, great juxtaposition.

Lovely old books! :-)

I'm more then, than now.

I fear where our new education mandate is heading. They care nothing about cursive writing or penmanship. I suspect many common math basics will be tossed for the "common" core. Such a "one box" method now.

Technology has its uses but not when it comes to the basics of learning.... And, as for classes on the computer, whatever happened to the exchange of ideas and the verbal discussion, Nice comparison.

Plug and play learning these days. But knowing something is not the same as understanding.
Johnny JAG02-Nov-2013 14:23
It's so true, my learners can't even remember to bring their memory sticks!
Faye White02-Nov-2013 12:50
I love technology (for the most part) but I can't say that the education systems are better today. We may have information at our finger-tips, but we don't retain much of what we "Google". Oh well... progress, eh?

A lot of changes within a lifetime. Would like to combine both: Learning the old way but carrying a stick.
Yvonne02-Nov-2013 10:35
Yes, what one learns in early life stays with you forever... like touch typing! v

Amazing comparison to show the drastic changes. Even though there are lots of advantages in our modern and technical world, I am glad I have my memories of how it used to be! V

excellent juxtaposition, Laine! V

Whilst I embrace change I do feel that some things are changed for changes sake. Changes in Education are particularly marked here in the UK but standards don't improve much which should be raising questions.
Open a book, feel the pages, get involved! Great comparison images.
