Nurses of Singapore

Nurses of Singapore are the backbone of its healthcare system. During the SARS outbreak of 2003, the nurses stoodfast and did not abandon their posts. All the photos in this gallery were taken 4 months after the outbreak. Hence the presence of the anti-viral N95 masks in the photos. I am proud to serve with such courageous professionals. This is my humble tribute to all the nurses who suffered and died during the terrible 4 months of 2003. Rest in peace. You will not be forgotten.

Hi Peter, I am a registered nurse in South Africa currently. I nursed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for 2 years and your photo's reminded me so much of my previous hospital - even the layout and medicine room. I was encouraged by one of our doctors who relocated to your country to do likewise.

remarcable gallery about life, normal, common life which, captured the way you did, shows a spectacular beauty and sensibility. Your choice for b/w film is great as you got rid of colored factoids and put the accent on your white dressed subjects. A series of image to remember. v

I'm a nurse in Hong Kong. During the SARS period i was deploy to work in the SARS ward. I good experience and i'm lucky to experience as only 6 of us can deploy to that area.

Definitely one of the best galleries I've seen on pbase, Peter! All of the photos are very interesting. It's amazing too I see others' photography I admire (such as B Real) also found this gallery. :)

Thank C Gull and B Real for the ind comments on this gallery. I used Ilford XP2 for the documentary and I did under-exposed some of the shots as it was really dark in the wards in the evening. As I was using very low shutter speed and under-exposing at times, some images may not be optimal. But I am never bothered about sharpness or tone as I am more interested in the subjects and their activities. By the way, all the photos were shot using available light.

This is life! very interesting gallery. Peter, what film are you using? Some of the fotos are a little foggy. Maybe you are pushing a 400 film? Does not matter though because the fotos have much interest Bryan

You know, so very coincidental that you visited my ER series. Because just two days agao I was here at this gallery and unable to leave word because of site restrictions at work. Then poof, you are at my ER Gall. I must say, Health Care, Nursing, the sick and the needy: its a universal thing. From the nurses faces and caring eyes and hands, to the desolation of some of the patients. If I didn't know I was in Singapore --- it could have been anywhere. A most excellent gallery, Peter. I showed it to my wife who is an ER nurse at Yale-New Haven hospital here in the US. We were both struck by the variety of hospital settings you portrayed, and many the similarities between our medical facilities, but most of all we were struck by the obvious caring and gentleness of your colleagues. Thank you for the tour. Oh - and one other thing - my wife thought that your nurses looked so... professional! (At her hospital, all the nurses wear scrubs, of course, but of many different styles and colors, so the uniforms in yours struck her as very effective in conveying calm and respect.)
