Spellbound

It's been quite a while since I've done an SP - but I've been so fascinated lately by the winter light coming through our windows - I couldn't help but set up the camera and tripod today.

Canon EOS 5D
1/500s f/2.8 at 100.0mm iso50 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

I happened to find this tonight for the second time, Jenene. Since more than 3 1/2 years have passed since my earlier comment, I'm changing the fraction to 1/64. :-)

Michaelangelo would be jealous
Of such beauty sculpted with light :)

Perhaps one of the most enchanting SPs I've seen on Pbase. Seeing as we can see only a bit more than half of you, I should only look 1/8 as good. :)

The lightplay is perfect ~!!~ (V)

I feel a connection with the flame profile image and this one - pictures of an intensity that is powerful.

The shadows that gather around your head are more cohesive now that you have remove the stray highlight that was at the lower left. A small thing, with large effect. I love Dave's comment, too -- he notes a human profile in the shadow that darkens your skin, just as I saw myself reflected by my glossy monitor, making us into a composite. His quote from Shelley's poem "The Earth" makes a wonderful companion to this haunted image.

In a way, the shadow that runs diagonally across your face looks like the shadow of someone else - there's the sloping forehead and a nose and jutting jaw across your mouth. Perhaps you've been confronted by your shadowy doppleganger.

"Ere Babylon was dust, / The Magus Zoroaster, my dear child, / Met his own image walking in the garden. / That apparition, sole of men, he saw. / For know there are two worlds of life and death: / One that which thou beholdest; but the other / Is underneath the grave, where do inhabit / The shadows of all forms that think and live / Till death unite them and they part no more...."

It is the degree of abstraction that makes this self portrait so absorbing, Jenene. The darker the image, the stronger the eye becomes in contrast. Remove the light on the arm in the lower left hand corner if you can, and watch the image become even more expressive. There is feeling a utter loneliness here that prods the imagination of the viewer. Amazingly, you invite me to become part of the portrait --I have a glossy monitor surface, and I see the reflection of half of my own face within the dark portion of your face, making us one and the same. It is an eerie effect.

I think you can learn much through self-portraiture, Jenene -- the model comes free, and no matter how hard you push her, she will do your bidding without complaint.

Wow, you really do look spellbound. It is as if your eye is staring at me but no really.
