We arrived in Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. Our drive got us here just in the nick of time to get the 11:30 tour. Our tour guide was very good. Most capitol building tour guides we have encountered are good. This was the 43rd capitol that we have visited. We will get five more on this road trip. The building itself is not very large compared to others. It was started before the Civil War. General Sherman did some damage during the occupation in 1865. Sherman did a lot of damage during his march to the sea and subsequent turn north through South Carolina and North Carolina. Maybe we should be seeking out his statues and start removing them.

Anyway after the state house we went over to the McKissick Museum on the campus of the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks). It was a small thing with some art, natural history, cabinetmaking and an exhibition of connections to Costa Rica. Nothing there grabbed my attention, but one painting had a very interesting treatment of reflections in puddles.

This was the first day of our trip where we were in full tilt touring mode. After we saw what we wanted to see it was back to the hotel for evening activities. That includes dinner which is often a salad. Today we were blessed with a Walmart just two blocks away. The make very good prepared salads. So that and some beer and wine is very nice. The other activities are Ginny's work on her scrap book and I work up the photos from the day.

Today's photo is of the statue of Strom Thurmond outside the capitol building. Life is good.
