We returned to the capitol this morning is search of better light to take our requisite photo in front of a capitol building. We found a nice spot and went about setting up Joe Tripod and taking some photos. It was a thin overcast so there was lots of diffuse light. Sunshine is much better, but you take what you can get. Our morning activity was a tour of the Robert Mills House. It was built for some wealthy person who died during the construction and subsequently is was never used as a residence. It served for a long time (1830-1960) as part of the Columbia Theological Seminary which subsequently moved to Decatur, Georgia. Our tour guide was very good. We were the only people on the tour which makes it a great opportunity for an interactive discussion. Most of these guides are very knowledgeable and you can get a lot of information from them.
In the afternoon we went to the South Carolina State Museum. Most states have a state museum near the capitol. These guys had lots of interesting exhibits from dinosaurs to lasers. Ginny spent a long time in the museum. I decided to have a go at the Civil War Relic Museum which is in the same place. That museum was not very good. They did have a very good exhibition of Civil War art by Xanthus Smith. The drawings were done during the war and the painting after the war, for the most part. I like the drawings because there were the equivalent of snapshots of the period. He was very good.
We did a quick trip to Walgreens to pick up some printed photos for Ginny's scrap book. Then it was back to the hotel via Walmart to get some salads.
