We spent the day in Gros Marne National Park. The weather was pretty crappy but we still managed to get in a nice hike with a naturalist which was very interesting. For me, the most interesting thing we saw was the Tablelands which are chunks of the earth's mantle which have been pushed up to the surface. They are barren because the type of rock is poisonous to plant life. They are also red because of the high iron content. We are learning quite a bit about Newfoundland history and politics. To listen to the guide, Newfoundland is getting a pretty good screwing from Ottawa. They have only been a province since 1949. Maybe they ought to reverse the process and keep the oil money to themselves.

Anyway, this was definitely a day of celebration for us. It is our 40th anniversary. If anybody would have told me when we got married that we would be in Cow Head, NL, for our 40th anniversary, I would have laughed. So here we are in our luxury room overlooking Shallow Bay and enjoying a glass of "Moose Joose" wine. It is from a Newfoundland winery and it is made with blueberries and partridgeberries. It was pretty good. life is good.

I have to agree with Michael. The Newfs were happy to have money from Central Canada from 1949 up to about 1999, and are now unhappy they have to repay some of it. But it makes the old adage ring ever more true, no good deed goes unpunished

While NFLD was a have not province from 1949 till the time oil started to flow they were pretty happy to have to have federal money coming their way. Now that the situation is reversed there are some that are not so happy. I'm sure there is a technical term for people of that ilk.
Congratulations on forty years of, judging by your photographs, very happy married life.
