My son Richard is a birder. He knows a whole lot about those critters so we decided to go on a birding trip to the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge which is near High Island. We drove to Galveston and took the Bolivar Ferry over to Bolivar Island then drove on to High Island and the reserve. Along the way we stopped and did some watching of a great number of water birds then ended up in the refuge. We did quite a bit of looking around and during the day Richard saw four species he had never seen before. So a good time was had by all. On the way back home we visited the site of Fort Anahuac which was one of the original fortifications built by the Mexican government. It didn't last very long and just six years after it was built, Texas became independent with the Battle of San Jacinto. A good time was had by all.
