In a way, the shadows are as real as the objects that create them. I've wondered if we ourelves are perhaps just shadows of something else we can not perceive.

I enjoy your photograph - subjects, composition, the light and lack of it.

Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Perfect Janine.

Superb image! You once again are using the light and shadows to tell your story of good and evil. The tree shadow looks like a fork in the road...which path will you choose?

Does man become the shadow of himself when in the grave? Is there something on the other side that is not seen on this side?
A very symbolic image, very well constructed. Bravo!

excellent image! the shadows also speak of the ephemeral nature of life, things always changing, always temporary... you have captured the mood of this place very well...

This is by far my favorite image from the Mission series. Phil's analysis that it links the fate of man to the course of nature is very close to my reaction not only to the site of this image, but the entire Mission grounds. The hand of man was very evident throughout the grounds, but the essence of man and his relationship to this place was most powerful for me here, in the graveyard. This image conveyed that overall relationship the best. - J

Okay, this is absolutely fabulous! The shadows and the cross just blew me away! This is one of your best! Excellent work! V

This is a far more abstract image than the other two cross pictures you link us to below. It asks more of the viewer's imagination, and offers a more thought provoking metaphor, linking the fate of man to the course of nature. The shadows of the trees swallow the grave, making this image simultaneously incongruous, abstract, and humane. It is one of your finest images. Your concept has much in common with an image I made in San Diego a few years ago:
