Dusky birch sawfly larvae (Craesus latitarsus)

Mer Bleue Conservation Area. On gray birch. There were 8 of these larvae altogether. Not moth caterpillars, but members of the Hymenoptera family, bees, wasps, sawflies... Adults look very much like wasps. The backward flip so many sawfly larvae do is a sign of agitation.
