Thank you to Larry Zink for contributing this great old image of a Standard Wholesale Grocery Company (137 - 169 NE 10th Street, Miami) truck on the Tamiami Trail taken by his father Kenneth Zink when he was driving for the company. A photo of Kenneth Zink and the truck is at
http://www.pbase.com/image/120337731 .
The Tamiami Trail officially opened on April 25, 1928.
As a result of this photo being posted, I received a very interesting and informative e-mail on 7/28/11 from Judy Allison who stated: "I chanced upon your site while searching for genealogy information on my father's family, and up popped the photos of a Standard Wholesale Grocery truck. In the late 1930's, my grandfather, Phillip Applebaum owned Standard Wholesale Grocery. At his death, my father Bennett Applebaum, and his brother Irving Applebaum took over the business and ran it for many years. As a child, I would go to Standard on some Saturday mornings and the warehouse foreman, Henry, would stand me on a forklift, then place me on top of a high stack of grocery cases. Good old memories! We lived on 47th Street on Miami Beach - my 90 year old mom still lives in the same house. My family would rent a cabana at one of the Beach hotels each summer, and I remember watching the Fountainbleau being built from our cabana at the Sorento. I attended Nautilus Elementary and Junior High and the old Miami Beach High. I was one of the baton twirling majorettes, and Richie Auspitz was my boyfriend. My 16th birthday celebration was seeing Frank Sinatra with Richie and my parents at the Fountainbleau. I've been living in New Mexico since 1967 but return to visit family almost every year. I haven't seen Richie since the 80's but one of my 3 sisters saw him at her 50th high school reunion in 2009. Give him a hello from me if you're in touch. And thanks for creating this site. I'm sure I have some old photos to add to your collection, if you'd like."
