Hi, just an update on this building: It no longer exists, as it has been demolished to make way for a new apartment complex. The same goes for the shopping center located diagonally across.

The actual address was 1001 E 25 St. (thanks to online newspaper archives :-) ) The lot is currently occupied by a huge medical center.

About a half a block west on the north side of 25th Street was a Margaret-Ann (which became Kwik Chek) grocery store. I remember coming out of that store one day when I had just finished first grade (1954-1955). We studied science from a little book called "I Wonder Why" , and I was immediately enthralled with science, so that day there was a chemistry set in the window of a store across the street. I begged my parents to buy it, but they knew better than to give potentially dangerous chemistry set to a seven year old. They were right, those old time chemistry sets had some dangerous chemicals and experiments. I can still close my eyes and see that Chemistry set in the window.

I finally got a chemistry set for Christmas just before my eleventh birthday, and it was everything I had dreamed it would be. The following Christmas I got a microscope and telescope. I grew up to be an R&D Chemist for 9 years and a Physics, Chemistry, and Astronomy teacher for 33 years, but noting will ever be better than that chemistry set.

Doctor Shalloway was my doctor for many years, however I'm not sure he is the same one mentioned here. When I first started going to Dr. Shalloway his office was located in the lobby of the Government Center in downtown Miami, and that was in the early 90's. He was probably to young to have been the doctor from Hialeah. Maybe his son? Does anyone here remember the Hialeah Shalloway's first name?
Lester is the name of the one I know from the Gov. Center location.

My era here was the late 60s - early 70s. This Rexall was a great place to get a burger, fries and shake. Not only was the burger perfect, but you'd also get extra shake in the tin cup it was made in, which accompanied the meal. To the right of the eatery section were wooden-style phone booths. Near the front entrance was the comic book stand. There was also an east entrance, looking toward the medical offices.
I had dentistry work done in the medical part of this building, back when you'd spit your blood into a whirlpool device.
Across the street was a place called Hurricane Shutters (or something similar), and further east was the gas company, Kwik-Chek, and Hialeah Hospital with the Randall-Eastern ambulances nearby (when they were red Cadillacs). On the west side of the RR tracks, diagonal from Stacy's Shoes (with its curved red neon arrow perpendicular to the street), on the corner was Allied Steel Products, and a gigantic water tower that could be seen from miles away (removed around 1973). Further west was a gas station that evolved from American to BP to Fina, and a further east was Lindsley Lumber and People's Bank, then Woolco and Northside.
One thing I recall about the RR crossing gates is the one on the west side was always a little slower in coming down. Its 'kding-ding-ding-ding' would finish about 3 seconds later than its counterpart, and its bell had a faster rhythm.
Those pony rides were part of a wonderful childhood, especially with the huge, beautiful tree right in the middle of it.

That was the Cowboy Center. Used to go there quite often. I also remember the pony rides about 1956-57. The Golden Earing was on the corner of E 5th Ave. and E 25th Street. My parents owned the Holiday Motel caddy corner from The Golden Earing, which was later a florist, I can't remember its name.

Wasn't there a "Poor Boys" sandwich shop across the street? Then a shopping strip diagonally across from Rexall that had a cowboy or western wear type store? How about Stacy's Shoes?

Thank you everyone for the information you provided about the doctors who worked in this building and across the street and the other businesses located there. I had forgotten about the pony rides east of the building but remember them now and that I rode them on occasion. Jeff's comment as Guest on 24-FEB-2010 about good meals in drug stores is right on and those meals were inexpensive. I always enjoyed lunch at the Rexall in Palm Springs Village Shopping Center and the Rexall at W. 65th and Red Road in the Kwik-Chek shopping center.

The building was built in 1957 not 1975. That was a typo. Dr Shalloway was my father's (Eli Galitz) first partner. Then Dr Sherwyn Weiss came to the practice. My dads first office in Hialeah was across the street where he moved his practice from Miami Beach in 1951. Just east of the building were pony rides. It was a great time then in Hialeah.

Dr. Shalloway was our family doctor dating back to the late 40 when he was across the street in the strip shopping center. His office was in the east end of the building. Al Lay's barber shop, Clive's soda fountain, Lucky Day Bar and Winkins hardware are others I remember.

Dr. Galitz was Dr. Shalloway's partner so he might have been your doc.

I lived on E. 28th Street between E. 9th and 10th Aves. That would be Dr Shalloway's building, I believe. Seems like Dr Halperin, the dentist, was also in that building. Reilly's Drugs, across 25th Street, was next to the Golden Earring bar. I remember my mom used to hate crossing 25th Street (on foot) and was relieved when the Rexall opened.
We loved Dr Shalloway and Dr Halperin.

I remember this building. I lived on East 24th Street between 9th and 10th. What was your father's name? I think he was my doctor when I was growing up.

Sorry, about the typo the building was constructed in 1957 not 1975. It is still there and still has a medical clinic in it.

I can't belive this. This was my fathers building at 1025 E. 25th st.. He built it in 1975. He had his medical practice in the other half of the building which would have been to the right of the picture. The Rexall did a very brisk counter and booth business at lunch. It is hard to belive that in those days you could always find a good meal in a drug store.
